The members of SELENE-NY applaud the New York State Department of
Environmental Conservation and the editorial staff of The Conservationist for initiating the publication of The Conservationist for Kids (C4K). This is exactly the kind of outreach that will spark the interest of young New Yorkers in becoming more engaged in the outdoors. In addition, it will encourage them to value the preservation of the natural world as they grow into adulthood. Conservationist for Kids (C4K) is a nature and environment magazine for kids in New York State. The magazine's web site invites kids to join the magazine as "we explore the outdoors in New York, and as we learn what kids, just like you, are doing the help the environment." Plans are to include information and activities to help children enjoy the outdoors, explore, and learn about nature and the environment.
SELENE hopes C4K will address the nocturnal environment including the half of the environment that is often ignored, the half above the horizonbeyond the treetops or skyline: the night sky. C4K could also encourage families to investigate the simple joys of visual astronomy and to explain how it touches our lives by assuring them that they can still enjoy the inspiration and wonder of the heavens from their own backyards. SELENE also invites C4K to examine the effects of lighting on the natural state of the world after sunset: darkness.
The DEC plans to distribute C4K to fourth graders at public schools in NYS. They have also made the magazine available online for free. You can read the magazine online at www.cforkids.org
