SELENE supports a memorial to the victims of the 9/11 tragedy. However, we question the wisdom of the lighting proposed for the Memorial Plaza at the World Trade Center site. An architect's rendering reveals plans for truly horrid "glare stick" fixtures. Check out the lower right corner of this image: National911Memorial.org
This is the same "Icetron" fixture that was installed on lower Broadway in Manhattan about 5 years ago. These "glare on a stick" fixtures send more light at adjacent buildings than down to the ground, blinding pedestrians and drivers in the process. More than a third of the light escapes uselessly into the sky.
The above photo shows the fixture surrounding a tiny sculpture park near the WTC site. The glare is obvious even against the the backdrop of a brightly lit building.
So here we are in the midst of tough economic times, when waste should not be tolerated. The 9/11 terrorists we're still fighting were funded by the energy rich countries of the Middle East. Does it really honor the 9/11 victims to "decorate" this site with glaring fixtures that waste energy and impair vision?
We should let the people in charge know that we support the memorial, but not these lights. As always, written letters have the biggest impact.
