The most frequent inquiry we receive at SELENE comes from people who have a problem with light shining onto their property, often into their bedroom windows, disrupting their sleep and adversely affecting their use and enjoyment of their property.
While every situation is unique, SELENE has found some common themes that we share with you in this article.
Solving Neighbor-to-Neighbor Light Trespass
The International Dark-Sky Association has an excellent information sheet about how to approach a neighbor with a bad light. We suggest you follow their approach. (This approach may also work if the offender is a small business.) In many cases, the light owner can save money and have a more attractive home or business by installing a different light fixture such as the GlareBuster or one of the other good lights featured on the IDA's residential lighting fixture page. Compute how much your neighbor could save by replacing that glaring, inefficient light by using our Lighting Cost Calculator. Present the facts to your neighbor. In the case of the typical residential floodlight you or the owner can clip on a simple flood light shield. Used in conjunction with an energy saving compact fluorescent floodlight, this shield can help the owner save money and reduce trespass. Please share your ideas for solving neighbor-to-neighbor lighting problems in our forums.
